Welcome to D3 Profiteer! Up until release, I will be writing about the big picture outlook on your ability to make real money by playing Diablo 3. I'll cover the philosophy and mindset, if you will. Once release day hits, the focus will be on a practical approach to getting money out of the system in a way that is fun and approachable.
Let's start today with the question drawing major message board controversy: 'Is it even possible? Can I really make any real money from Diablo 3?'
I assume you're here because you did the same thing I did a little while back. You heard there would be a 'RMAH' (Real Money Auction House) in Diablo 3. A well of excitement built inside you, as your dream of making money just for playing video games was finally about to come true (or maybe you already cashed in on Everquest, and have been awaiting the return). Either way you rushed to the internet to find more info, and immediately hit a wall of naysayers deriding anyone foolish enough to plan on making any money from the RMAH. That made you seriously question your enthusiasm, and wonder if there was really any point to it all.
The doubters list many reasons for their claims:

- You can't beat the gold farmers and scammers.
- No one will be foolish enough to spend real money on early game items.
- No one will spend money for gold because it’s so easy to come by.
- Competition will be so severe that there will be no money to be made.
- The fees will be so intense, it won't be worth listing anything.
Economies are driven by desire, impatience and emotion. The below is a short list of totally irrational things that millions of humans spend money on every day:
All Diablo 3 Season 24 Guides (Patch 2.7.1) The new season starts today at 5 PM PST/CET/KST, and we have the guides ready. The season and patch add some extremely powerful and very wanted ethereal items to chase, so there should be quite a bit of variety present. Also, in case you weren't aware, the Emanate system and follower revamp that was featured in the last season is now a PERMANENT.

There is no question that people will spend money on the RMAH auction house. In fact, there is no question they will spend gobs of money on the RMAH. Why? Because people are always willing to spend money for things they desire, things that make them feel powerful or cool, or things that will increase their sense of comfort and convenience.
Still not convinced? You need look no further than Diablo 2's robust economy (both the Stone of Jordan model and the black/grey market surrounding that game) for proof that there is money to be made in Diablo 3.

Twelve years after its release, someone is still paying $50 for a top end shield in Diablo 2.Make no mistake, there is a consumer. The market exists. In fact, considering its a Blizzard game, the market should be enormous, span many demographics, and exhibit addictive personality traits; All factors that will help you and I put money in our pockets. Deniers can abstain if they like, but they can't stop gamers around the world with expendable income from doing what they always do.
The harder question is this: 'Can you and I be the ones to get their money, and if so, how much of it?'
The answer to that gets a little more complicated, but I believe the answer is 'Yes. Not enough to quit your day job, but enough to make it worth your time.'
Here is why I believe that:

Why Diablo 3's Real Money Auction House Should Not Be Your ...
- You and I are smart. We aren't going to compete in the easy access markets most likely to be fueled by farming. If you try to sell gold, week 1 you'll be a fart downwind of a sewage treatment facility. You may get a sniff or two, but good luck getting noticed.
- Farmers don't think in terms of efficiency, they think in terms of volume. In short, we don't need to compete on volume. We need to compete on cleverness. There will always be wins available for the smart seller willing to think ahead of the curve.
- We'll think like the house, not the gambler. In any market there will be people who are impatient, bad at math, or indifferent to efficiency. Our goal is to be the opposite: patient, good at math, and in love with efficient use of our time and efforts.
- We'll take the long view. We're not going to try to cash out all our assets right away. We're going to build assets over time, and liquidate only when the timing is right.
- We're going to start with modest goals and work our way up. I saw someone proposing they'd make $1,000 the first month. I think that may be possible, but I think its a bad goal to start with. If you set your goal at making back your purchase price of ~$60 in the first month, you're looking at $15 per week. Even the harshest forum troll would have a hard time claiming $15 profit in a week is unrealistic. If you can start there, and grow your profit to $30/$40/$50 a week, that's some nice extra pocket money you got while having fun instead of working.

That is the ultimate goal after all right? That's what got you excited in the 1st place. I can play video games, have fun doing it, and also make money.
That can be done, and you and I will do it.
